Hughes STEM High School athletes are basking in the afterglow of their trip to the Sunshine State.
The Big Red Varsity Boys Basketball team traveled to Daytona Beach, Florida during winter break for the Sunshine Classic Basketball Tournament.
Not only did the student-athletes take part in the competition, it was an opportunity for some to see the ocean for the first time.
“Over half the team had not been to the ocean before and one of our coaches had never been either,” Andrew Mueller, Hughes Athletic Director, said. “(It) was a great experience for the kids and staff.”
More than 20 schools from across the country competed in the tournament. Hughes faced teams from Georgia, Florida and Kentucky and finished 1-2 on the week.
In between games, the team practiced in a college facility, spent time on the beach, built relationships with other athletes across the country, enjoyed the hotel swimming pool and bonded as a team.
