CPS Board of Education Renames Cincinnati Digital Academy for late Governor and CPS Board Member John J. Gilligan

During the regularly scheduled CPS Board of Education Business Meeting Monday, November 6, 2023 the Board of Education voted unanimously to rename Cincinnati Digital Academy (CDA) for the late Governor and CPS Board Member John J. Gilligan. The resolution, read by each Board Member, was resolved after a two year process.

A Cincinnati native, Xavier alum and WWII veteran, Gilligan served as Ohio Governor from 1971-1975 where he created the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, improved state treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and implemented programs to save Ohio school districts from closing. He later served as an administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), led Notre Dame University’s Peace Studies program and established the Civic Forum at University of Cincinnati. He was elected to CPS’ Board of Education in 1999 where he served for eight years, supporting CPS schools’ transition to community learning centers to provide health, mental health and other services to students and families.

The renaming of CDA to John J. Gilligan Digital Academy took effect immediately. To read the full resolution click here.
