Project Connect Gives Families Autonomy with Order Ahead Food Program
As school is out for summer, a new, special service remains for Project Connect families.
Project Connect provides advocacy paired with specialized educational services and lifestyle enrichment opportunities for children in CPS who are experiencing homelessness.
In addition to summer programs, Project Connect’s online “order ahead” program is available to families this summer. The pilot program, in partnership with the Freestore Foodbank, started in March.
The program is designed to help the district’s most vulnerable families by giving them the autonomy to select food items that are suitable to their family’s preferences.
“It is an honor that the Freestore Foodbank chose Project Connect to collaborate with and offer this program to our families,” Project Connect program manager Rebeka Beach said.
Through the program, families have the opportunity to select which food items they will receive twice a month. The user-friendly website includes pictures of the available items and allows families to select specific quantities. Various food items are added to the website when they become available in the warehouse.
Once a family has completed their order, they will receive a confirmation email. The food boxes are delivered to the Project Connect office at Rising Stars Academy at Vine on the first and fourth Monday of every month.
The Project Connect Liaison sets up a time and place for families to pick up the food boxes, or delivers the box directly to the family.
A Project Connect Liaison or Freestore Foodbank employee are available to help families navigate the website.
“We want to be able to reduce equity gaps for our students experiencing homelessness. We want them to know that we are a safe space and we are here simply to support you,” Beach said.
