What started as a fun hobby and one kind gesture quickly turned into a business opportunity for Haizel McNair, a Silverton Elementary School student.
In her spare time, you can find McNair working on art projects - whether drawing, painting or assembling handmade wares. She’s an artist at heart, her hands always busy creating something new. As McNair enters the first grade this school year, she’s learning to profit from her passion.
“I want to sell things,” McNair said. “I like making things for people that are cute and fun, to make them feel good.”
After painting bird houses as gifts for Teacher Appreciation Week last spring, McNair was inspired to continue painting and crafting goods for others by positive feedback. One of those fateful bird house recipients, Ms. Barron, pointed McNair toward the City Flea Kids Market and suggested she apply.
McNair said she wants her own business so she can sell things that make people happy and smile. Now she can make that dream a reality after being accepted by the City Flea Kids Market.
“The City Flea Kids Market allows local children to showcase their wares, feel empowered and get an idea of what it’s like to own and run a small business,” Haille McNair, Haizel’s mother, said.
After learning to read last school year and spending much of her summer break perfecting her craft, McNair is ready to hit the open market and confident by the opportunity for sales.
McNair is committed to her art and excited to see where this small business takes her. McNair will be selling bird houses, wind chimes, bracelets and painted pots with self-grown flowers Saturday, August 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Washington Park (1230 Elm Street).
