Woodward Graduates Honored with Inaugural Ohio School Safety Stand Out Award

Woodward Career Technical High School graduates Jaileyana Fraley and Lagena Johnson were honored for their life-saving skills with the inaugural Ohio School Safety Center Stand Out Student Award presented July 25 at the School Safety Summit in Columbus.

Fraley and Johnson were selected by the Ohio Student Safety Advisory Council “due to both the proactive and reactive measures that these courageous students took to keep their school and fellow classmates safe.”

Fraley and Johnson, who had just completed Stop the Bleed training through Woodward’s Health Science career-tech program, came to the aid of a fellow student suffering from a gunshot wound just outside the school’s campus earlier this year. As a team, they applied pressure to stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived.

“We’re trained to remain calm in situations like that,” Johnson said. “It could actually mess with the patient if you are not in the right state. You have to make sure the patient is okay.”

Senior Director of Safety Services Dr. Jason Spencer, who nominated Fraley and Johnson, credits the students’ quick action and Woodward’s excellent educational programs that teach real-world skills needed in times of emergency.

“Good things are happening in our schools,” Dr. Spencer said. "I love seeing students get the recognition they deserve. These students went far above and beyond to save the life of another student.”
