Woodward Career Technical High School graduate Antanaja Johnson received a special surprise at her graduation—the inaugural Superintendent Scholarship to Central State University. The $1,000 scholarship comes after CSU held a special recruitment event for Cincinnati Public Schools earlier this year.
Some CPS seniors received on-the-spot admission to CSU, one of Ohio’s two Historically Black Colleges and Universities, during the event at Woodward Career Technical High School.
Students and their families met with CSU representatives from admissions, scholarships, student life and activities, academics, Honors College, career services and 1890 Land Grant & Extension Services. CSU President Dr. Jack Thomas gave the keynote address and Director of Admissions & Recruitment LaMar Scott recognized Presidential Scholars. CPS Superintendent Iranetta Rayborn Wright and Board Member Dr. Kareem Moncree-Moffett presented as well.
Hughes STEM High School Senior Kamya Williams says CSU has always been on her bucket list. She applied that night and within minutes had an acceptance letter in hand.
“I’ve taken tours, I’ve been to events. It’s everything I’m looking for,” Williams said. “I will fit in. This is my place.”
Williams credits her Hughes robotics and engineering teachers with inspiring and preparing her for a future career in her favorite subject: engineering.
Woodward had the greatest percentage of seniors in attendance and the $1,000 Superintendent Scholarship from CSU to award to a graduating senior. To date, CSU has awarded nearly $50,000 in scholarships to CPS students.
