CPS Students Swing Big Wins at Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) jazz ensembles took a great stride in their victories at the 2023 Lionel Hampton National Jazz Festival. 

The University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is one of the largest educational jazz festivals in the world, featuring over 400 student performances. The festival also hosts nearly 100 workshops and clinics for students to practice and improve their musical skills. 

CPS won in four categories and took runner-up in three.

  • Winner - AAAA High School Combo Division: Cincinnati Public Schools

  • Winner - Elementary Instrumental Solo Competition - Francis McHenry (piano), Cincinnati Public Schools

  • Runner-Up - Elementary Instrumental Solo Competition - Benjamin Arora (trumpet), Cincinnati Public Schools

  • Winner - Junior High School Instrumental Solo Competition - Eva Wesley (violin), Cincinnati Public Schools

  • Runner-Up - Junior High School Instrumental Solo Competition - Evelyn Yosmali (vibraphone), Cincinnati Public Schools
