Board Meeting Recap - Feb. 27, 2023
Cincinnati Public Schools’ Board of Education met for a regularly scheduled business meeting on Monday, Feb. 27, 2023. During the meeting, Superintendent Wright presented the Board with a gift in celebration of Public School’s Week. During the Hearing of the Public, over 20 individuals addressed several items including funding athletic programs, asking for a meeting with the Superintendent and her executive team to better understand everyone’s roles and responsibilities, a recap of research by a Clark senior, concerns about reallocation of positions happening at some schools, concerns over newly created positions and budget transparency.
Once everyone had a chance to speak, the Board moved on to approving the minutes from the February 6 business meeting and the February 6 special meeting. The Board then heard a recap of the Student Achievement Committee of the Whole meeting, discussed next steps in the Strategic Plan process, and listened to two presentations.
The first presentation, by Treasurer Jennifer Wagner, was the announcement of earning the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement Award of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 16th year in a row. The Board expressed congratulations to Treasurer Wagner and the entire finance team. This presentation was followed by a presentation of Foreign Language Adoption Update, in which Superintendent Wright outlined the adoption of Foreign Language curriculum across the district.
The Board then moved on to passing three resolutions: 1) Opposing Senate Bill 1; 2) A Waiver for Alcohol use at SCPA for Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and 3) Nominating Ross Meyer and Pamela Bowers to the Preschool Promise Board of Managers. All three resolutions passed unanimously.
To close out the meeting, the Board recognized 6 retirees, passed the Treasurer’s report, discussed Board matters and provided inquiries and updates regarding transportation of spring athletes and the health and safety of students and families. Board Member Moroski requested the Superintendent to look into having Sign Language interpreters return to Board Meetings and Board Member Wineberg requested data about the Bully Button. Vice President Craig gave kudos to students that participated in the Ethics Bowl regional competition and Board member Bolton gave kudos to the students selected to be in Honor Band and perform at Xavier this past weekend.
