CPS is Making Waves With Water Safety Initiative!
Swimming is an important life skill that kids of all ages should learn about. What better way to spread information about water safety to students than through a school district partnership with the YMCA?
CPS and the YMCA joined forces to provide easy distribution of safety materials such as videos and guides to kindergarten through 2nd-grade classrooms. These materials are designed to help students learn about water safety and how to swim safely.
“Swimming lessons and swim safety information is something we want to provide to as many CPS students and families as possible,” said Brent Langhorne, Elementary Athletics Coordinator. “Our goal, in partnership with the YMCA & CRC, is to educate families and students on ways to stay safe around water so they can have fun and avoid any dangers or accidents that may occur. This knowledge and initiative will make us stronger as a community as we continue to provide equitable opportunities for students and their families.”
The material provides water safety lessons for one week during the month of May in celebration of Water Safety Month. Lessons include Life Jacket Safety, Floating in the Pool and Backyard Pool Safety.
Each topic has its own video with an included document with questions for teachers to review with students.
