CPS' 3D Printing/STEM Clubs Expose Students to New Opportunities

CPS’ 3D Printing/STEM Clubs are showing students that the sky's the limit as they’re exposed to new opportunities.

Students from Bond Hill Academy, Fairview-Clifton German Language School, Hughes STEM High School and North Avondale Montessori shared their projects, participated in activities and visited a lab at the University of Cincinnati during the Greater Cincinnati STEM Collaborative (GCSC) Showcase.

Bond Hill Academy students designed a 3D printed bracelet called “Smart Charger,” allowing anyone to charge a cellphone on the go.

“Phones go dead a lot of the time so we thought we could create an invention to keep phones from dying,” fifth grade Bond Hill Academy student Destiny Watts said.

3d Printing 2023 Watts looked forward to presenting the club’s invention at the showcase after spending weeks perfecting the design.

STEM Specialist Leslie Lyles leads the club of young engineers and scientists.

“I am trying my best for them to see that this is a math and science discovery school so we do have STEM opportunities and activities. We would love to inspire as many students as possible to pursue those careers because I don't think they see a lot of people who look like them in STEM careers and maybe they think it's not an option, but it is an option,” Lyles said. “I also keep up images of people who look like them, who are mathematicians and scientists so they know it's in their DNA. It's in the people who came before them. Their ancestors were very strong scientists and mathematicians, but I don't think they know that.”
