Speak Up Speak Out

"Speak Up, Speak Out" is a student-led initiative fostering youth voice, civic engagement, and action on equity issues like racial injustice and violence, empowering students to identify problems, propose solutions, and create real change through forums, leadership conferences, and curriculum adjustments with district support. It's a platform for students, particularly Black and Brown youth, to discuss their experiences, demand justice, and work with leaders on actionable items like curriculum changes, anti-racism policies, and community-building, turning their concerns into tangible improvements within the school system and city.

Student Focus:

  • Platform for Student Voice: Provides safe spaces for students (7th-12th grade) to share feelings and experiences about societal issues.
  • Focus on Equity: Aims to address racial injustice, inequality, and youth violence through student-driven conversations and solutions.
  • Leadership Development: Develops civic skills like critical thinking, collaboration, and communication through project-based learning.
  • Action & Change: Students create plans, present demands (like Black history year-round, anti-racism policies), and work with district leaders to implement them.
  • Community InvolPartners with organizations and university volunteers to support student efforts and provide resources.

Annual Events:

  • January: National Day of Racial Healing event
