Currently Enrolled CPS 6th Grade Students

Thank you for your interest in Walnut Hills High School. Eligibility for CPS 6th grade students to Walnut Hills High School is determined by their national percentile rank scores from the iReady Reading and Math assessments. Sixth grade students take iReady assessments in the Fall and Winter, giving all students two chances to qualify for Walnut Hills High School. CPS eliminated Iowa assessments for CPS 6th graders in the 2025-26 school year to reduce testing fatigue, while saving a significant amount of instructional time for students as well as financial resources for the District. Students take iReady assessments multiple times in their elementary years so they are familiar with the test and the online platform, allowing for a better testing experience. Data from the last two years show that using iReady assessments rather than Iowa assessments leads to a larger and more diverse pool of eligible students, with all demographics of students benefiting from the change.

There will be no need to sign your CPS 6th grader up to take the WHEE.

In order to qualify for Walnut Hills High School, students must score a minimum of the 65th percentile on both the iReady Reading and Math assessments, and have a composite score (iReady Reading + iReady Math) of no less than 140. A student’s highest Reading score and Math score from the Fall and Winter administrations will be used to determine the composite score. These scores have not changed from previous years.

6th grade iReady assessments, along with other assessments, were already used to determine eligibility for the gifted and exceptional programs at Spencer Center for students’ 7th grade year and this practice will continue. More information on eligibility for Spencer Center can be found by visiting https://spencergifted.cps-k12.org/academics.

If you have any questions about the administration of the iReady, please reach out to your student’s school.
