An Important Message from Superintendent Murphy

Dear Cincinnati Public Schools staff, families and community partners,

As an educator for more than 35 years, Cincinnati Public Schools parent and grandparent and Bond Hill native, I am deeply invested in the work of our District to provide high-quality learning and equitable opportunities for every student. The proposed Ohio budget, combined with proposed federal cuts to education funding, threaten the critical progress we are making for our students, while placing an undue financial burden on our local community.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s proposed state budget will cause significant financial harm to public school districts across the state, while investing in charter schools and vouchers. Cincinnati Public Schools would lose more than $27 million over the next two school years under this proposed budget, and reduce the state share of our funding to 25-percent, an 11-percent decrease by 2027. These drastic reductions, which don’t account for years of inflation, will force districts like CPS to either place a greater burden on local taxpayers or cut critical programs and services that support student success.

Equally concerning are the proposed federal budget cuts to education, which threaten vital funding streams for programs that serve our most vulnerable students. Reductions in Title I funding, special education services and early childhood education would have devastating consequences for our District, limiting opportunities for students. By failing to prioritize education funding at both the state and federal levels, lawmakers risk jeopardizing the future workforce, success and economic mobility of our state and nation.

Education is the foundation of a strong society, and it is imperative that we invest in our students and our commitment to be Here for Kids. In the best interest of our students, I respectfully urge you to contact your state legislators to advocate for fair and equitable education funding for all Ohio students, ensuring CPS can continue to provide the high-quality education and support our students deserve.

Warm Regards,
Shauna Murphy
Superintendent
Cincinnati Public Schools
