DHL, Cincinnati Public Schools, Supply Chain OKI, Cincinnati State, PNC Bank, Cincinnati Works, United Way Partner for Logistics Training Program
CPS Students will earn MSSC Certified Logistics Technician Certificates and college credits
Cincinnati Public Schools students from Oyler School and Dater High School are on the road to a career in logistics as part of a new career pathway program the District launched with DHL, United Way, Supply Chain OKI, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, PNC Bank, and Cincinnati Works. The initiative is designed to provide high school students with a comprehensive training program in logistics and the chance to pursue a career at DHL.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students,” said Laura Mitchell, Superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools. “Our My Tomorrow program aims to provide students with a pathway to college and lucrative careers. This program gives our students a competitive edge for the jobs that are driving the world’s economy.”
During the sixteen-week program, participating students attend a specialized logistics class at their school taught by an adjunct professor from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. These classes result in college credit and two industry-recognized credentials once students pass the course and credentialing exams. Those students can then co-op with DHL on weekends, working two five-hour shifts at the DHL Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG) facility over a two-month period. DHL currently employs more than 3,300 employees at its hub at the CVG airport and is planning to recruit hundreds more as the company continues to grow.
PNC Bank and Cincinnati Works will provide financial literacy and comprehensive career-readiness training for the students.
“We consider providing financial education an important and necessary investment in the community and we’re committed to helping build a solid foundation for our local economy,” said Kay Geiger, PNC regional president for Cincinnati.
This opportunity gives students a sense of what it is like to work in the real world. After they complete the program and go through the job application process, they’ll attend the program’s Career Signing Day, where most will receive an official offer letter from DHL for employment.
“With this career pathway program, DHL is at the forefront of providing students with the tools they need to succeed in the workforce, giving them the hands-on experience that they are not exposed to anywhere else,” said Colin Beynon, VP and General Manager of the DHL CVG Hub. “We are proud to be a part of this program, and are excited for what is to come in the logistics industry after seeing the enthusiasm from these impressive students.”
In addition to meeting certain financial criteria, students must have a grade-point average of 2.0 or higher, an 85 percent or better attendance record, and an interest in the field of logistics to participate in the career pathway program.
DHL will provide transportation for the students not only during their co-op, but also for the first year that those who are hired work at CVG. DHL will also provide any job-related equipment they need. Participants who become employees could, if they wished, go on to pursue college degrees with the help of the DHL tuition reimbursement program.
