FIRST Lego League Robotics Team Howl Bout It to Compete in Global Competition

May 17, 2021

Howl Bout It team: Selby, Grace, Edwin, Adrianna, Tyler and CollinCongratulations to FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Team Howl Bout It! In January, the team won the Robot Performance Award for highest score, and the overall Champion's Award at their regional FLL competition, qualifying them for the Ohio FLL Championships.  In March, Howl Bout It placed 5th in Robot Performance at the State Championships, were recognized as an alternate to represent Ohio in the Global Innovation Award competition, and they were a Champion's Award Finalist, which earned them an invitation to to compete with 70 other teams from around the world at the Virtual Open Invitational in June.

The team loves building and coding robots, but FIRST Robotics is about more than just robots. This year's FLL Challenge theme focuses on exercise and active play, so for their Innovation Project, the students created a fitness scavenger hunt to motivate kids to get outside and be active. They partnered with Great Parks of Hamilton County and have installed their scavenger hunt in 14 local parks. Howl Workout competitors use their phones to score points by logging codes they find in the parks on the students' webpage. The students recently teamed up with the Cincinnati Reds Community Fund, so a few local Howl Workout competitors can find themselves celebrating their workout wins at the Reds ballpark. The team is looking forward to growing and expanding their fitness scavenger hunt to include more local parks — so keep an eye out for Howl Bout It while you're exploring local trails!

These talented and creative third, sixth and eighth graders from Spencer Center for Gifted and Exceptional Students and Walnut Hills High School have been working together as a team for three years, and we wish them well as they represent CPS on a world stage in June. Congratulations to Selby, Grace, Edwin, Adrianna, Tyler and Collin! Howl Bout It is coached by Walnut Hills High School teacher Laurie Cotton.
