CPS Superintendent Mitchell Recipient of Empowering Education Award

October 11, 2018

Congratulations to Superintendent Laura Mitchell who was presented with the Empowering Education Award at the NAACP’s Annual Freedom Fund Dinner October 6.

The Empowering Education Award recognizes leaders in education who greatly impact African-American students in the greater Cincinnati area.

Mitchell said the award provides a platform for the entire community to embrace education. “I believe education is about social justice,” she said. “It’s important for our kids to have an education that allows them access and opportunity which leads to their civil rights. For young people to thrive and do well in this community, an education is important and it helps to level the playing field.”

Mitchell was appointed superintendent in 2017. She is a lifelong Cincinnatian, born in Bond Hill, and beams with pride when she tells you what high school she graduated from: CPS’ School for Creative and Performing Arts. After earning her bachelor’s degree at Bennett College in North Carolina and her master’s degree at the University of Cincinnati, she began her life’s work in education with Cincinnati Public Schools. She has worked for CPS in a number of roles, including teacher, assistant principal, principal and teaching coach who provided guidance to schools throughout the district.
