For Immediate Release November 14, 2016
CPS Magnet Application Lottery Now Open
Cincinnati Public Schools’ magnet school online application lottery opened Saturday, November 12, and continues through December 10, for parents seeking seats in schools offering a variety of program choices.
Access to the online application is via CPS’ website.
Parents may enter applications for their children for the 2017-18 school year any time during the four-week Round 1 application period, selecting up to five school choices in order of preference. After the Round 1 application period closes December 10, CPS will run a computerized lottery, assigning a random number to each application, then assigning magnet school seats based on the numbers, parents’ choices and available space.
Two additional rounds of the lottery will be run before May 2017, but submitting an application during Round 1 gives parents the best opportunities to get children into first-choice magnet schools before they fill up.
Applications may be submitted from any computer or tablet with Internet access, or from the CPS mobile app.
CPS' magnet elementary schools offer a variety of content focuses – such as foreign languages, the arts, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) — and teaching styles – Montessori and Paideia — to give parents and students educational choices. Parents choose to send their children to magnet elementary schools by applying online a school year ahead.
Other options for parents are CPS' thriving neighborhood elementary schools, to which students are assigned based on home addresses.
Cincinnati Public Schools’ online lottery application process for applications to magnet elementary schools was introduced in October 2015, and, after a successful pilot, was adopted by CPS’ Board of Education as the application process for magnet schools.
