School Policies

  • Included on this page are highlights from our policies and procedures. The Winton Hills Student Handbook includes more detail on each of these items.

    Attendance Policies

As a reminder, our hours are:

    School Hours: 7:40 a.m. - 2:10 p.m.
    Office Hours: 7:40 a.m. - 2:10 p.m.
Breakfast is available for students beginning at 7:30 a.m. Students start each day by watching the WHA News.

    Absence Procedures

To report an absent child, call the school office or email us using this Absence Reporting Form. If you have not notified the office, your home will be called. A written note is required upon return stating the reason for absence.

Attendance problems are referred to the School Social Worker. Students who are frequently tardy and /or absent may be denied extracurricular field trips so that they may make up class time. They also may be referred to Truancy Mediation and/or Children’s Services.

    Bus Safety

Student behavior that distracts bus drivers is a hazard to the vehicle's safe operation, and jeopardizes the safety and welfare of all passengers. Misbehavior while on a yellow school bus or a Metro bus can result in disciplinary action for the student or the suspension of transportation service for the student. Read more about our requirements for student behavior on buses.

    Discipline

Review CPS' Code of Conduct for disciplinary procedures.

Rewarding students for responsible behavior is a very important part of our discipline plan. There will be age-appropriate incentive activities in individual classes, teams, and school-wide. To be eligible for incentives, students must be in uniform every day. Behavior, academics, attendance and wearing uniform are the basis for incentives.

    Dress Code

Students who attend Winton Hills are required to dress in their school uniform every day.

    Preschool-6th grade students:

    • Plain, white or blue, collared shirts
    • Navy, black or khaki pants, skirts, capris, jumpers, or knee-length shorts
    • Solid blue or white sweatshirts, or sweaters

Students are not permitted to wear:

    • Jeans of any color
    • Hoodies of any color
    • Hats, head gear, scarves, or bandanas
    • Embroidered/tie-dyed/midriff or halter tops
    • Short skirts or shorts (must be no shorter than 2 inches above knee)

    • Outside jackets or vests in class (jackets with zippers)

    Snow Days and School Delays

Snow days and school delays are announced on our website, local TV and radio stations, CPS' mobile app, and through automated phone calls. Assume school is open unless you hear otherwise. Learn more about CPS' severe weather and emergency closing procedures.

    Visiting During School Hours

We welcome visits from parents and guardians. However, to protect student safety, all visitors must sign in at the main office and wear a visitor's badge. Parents/guardians who would like a conference with their child's teacher must schedule an appointment with the teacher.
