Midway is Soaring to New Heights
At Midway Elementary, we strive to achieve our best by utilizing a staff of highly qualified and well-trained educators to work closely with the students in the most conducive learning environment available. We team with parents to support the child in every way possible, because we recognize the importance that a child's home has on his or her education. We offer a well rounded education, including the core subjects of mathematics, language arts, science, social studies and the fine arts, including visual art, music, technology, and physical education. Through all of these areas of study, our goal is to discover each student's potential and guide him or her to success through that channel.

Our Staff
The highly qualified teaching staff at Midway works together in teams to plan and implement instruction that meets the needs of our diverse student population.
Teachers are available through email as well as voicemail throughout the school day as their time permits. Please allow them 24 hours to return your call or email. If you wish to speak in person or visit a classroom, you must make an appointment ahead of time. This allows them to focus their time and energy on their primary goal of instructing the children.

Mathematics
Our math curriculum is built on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). State education chiefs and governors in 48 states came together to develop the Common Core, a set of clear college- and career-ready standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. These standards provide our teachers with consistent goals and benchmarks to ensure students are progressing on a path to success in college, career, and life.
In math, there is a greater focus on fewer topics per grade level:
- In grades K-2, the concepts, skills, and problem solving are related to addition and subtraction.
- In grades 3-5, the concepts, skills and problem solving are related to multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions.
- In grade 6, the concepts, skills and problem solving are related to ratios and proportional relationships, and early algebraic expressions and equations.
Students have access to many hands-on materials while learning and then translate their new skills into solving real life problems.

Technology
We welcome students into our newly updated Computer Lab everyday. We have 30 new HP Laptop computers for the students to use in the lab. Each computer has the most up-to-date educational programs available. In addition, we have several mobile labs of laptops, iPads, and Leapfrog tablets for student use.
Our students can use programs that range from Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel to the use of the World Wide Web.

Fine Arts
Our fine arts team is always busy developing our students' abilities to sing, play, dance, act, draw, sculpt and paint. Our goal is to help each student discover the talents that he or she possesses and to guide him or her in using them productively.
Art
Art teacher Miss Bergsman enjoys working with students in kindergarten through sixth grade and exploring various forms of visual media. Students have the opportunity to submit art to the city wide art show, which displays the winning entries at the downtown branch of the Cincinnati/Hamilton County Public Libraries. In addition, this year they will create combined artwork for the CPS Fine Arts Showcase in May at the University of Cincinnati's DAAP department.
Drama
Each year, we offer the students in 4th through 6th grades the chance to audition and perform in a musical theater production. This is possible in part through the generous funding from the Thomas J. Rebold Foundation for Youth Performing Arts.
Our students most recently premiered Disney's The Lion King and look forward to this year's production of Shrek the Musical Jr. In previous years, they have performed various shows, including The Wizard of Oz, Cinderella, High School Musical, Seussical, and Disney's Little Mermaid.
We also welcome Cincinnati's Playhouse in the Park as they team with Midway in a pilot program to develop drama at Midway through heavy involvement with our students during and after school.
Music
The younger students (kindergarten through 3rd grade) perform at our annual holiday spectacular, where they celebrate all of the traditions that occur in December. You never know what you might see in this ever-changing tradition!
Students also have the opportunity to be selected to perform in the annual CPS Fine Arts Showcase "Community Collage" on May 16 with students from other CPS schools. This amazing event is held at the Aronoff Center for the Arts and the concert is free and open to the public.
Through Mr. Jung, the students can learn how to sing and create music. There is also a great opportunity for our students in grades 4, 5, and 6 to be selected for the CPS Honor Choir, which will perform in early May. In previous years, the group performed under the direction of world renowned composer and director Rollo Dillworth. This group has also performed at the World Choir Games at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. What an amazing experience! The academic fine arts standards that we follow are available by clicking here, to go to the Ohio Department of Education.
