Woodward High School Marching Band Receives Grant for New Instruments
Woodward High School’s Marching Band, known as “The Pride,” received a $3,000 grant to enhance its musical offerings this summer. With this funding, the band welcomed three new trombones and six trumpets, making rehearsals more engaging and dynamic.
The grant was facilitated by Activities Beyond the Classroom, which handled the purchase of the new instruments, ensuring the band had the resources it needed to thrive. With these additions, “The Pride” is ready to perform at various events throughout the school year.
The band is already participating in college homecoming parades, football games, and the Battle of the Bands, bringing vibrant energy to the community. These new instruments not only improve the band's sound but also provide students with the opportunity to express themselves and develop as musicians.
Tyree Gilbert, the marching band coach, emphasized the impact of the new instruments, stating, “They give students a sense of importance and improve intonation compared to outdated instruments. Marching down the street with shiny horns captures the audience's attention.”
Gilbert shared that the students’ reactions to the new instruments were unforgettable. “When they were called to the office, they were so excited, especially after we received sousaphones earlier. Opening the cases to reveal the new instruments led to screams of joy, high-fives, and jumping around. Many students don’t have access to new instruments, and it truly makes a difference in their sound.”
The Woodward High School Marching Band continues to shine, showcasing its talent and passion while making music that resonates with audiences throughout the community.
