Withrow High School Alumna and Freedom Rider Honored at NHS Meeting
Frances Canty, a proud Withrow High School alumna, and courageous Freedom Rider, was celebrated during a recent National Honor Society (NHS) meeting. Her children, David and Nicole, shared her inspiring legacy with students.
Mrs. Canty, who graduated around 1955, faced significant societal challenges as she fought for civil rights alongside notable figures. “A lot of stuff wasn’t open to discussion back then,” David reflected, noting the strength and resilience that defined their mother’s advocacy throughout her life.
As the daughter of a successful entrepreneur, Mrs. Canty emphasized the importance of representing her family and community. “She taught us that if you don’t stand for yourself, someone will push you into a box,” Nicole recalled. This lesson shaped David and Nicole’s educational journeys, as their mother fought tirelessly to ensure they had the same opportunities as their peers.
The Canty family recently discovered more about Mrs. Canty’s pivotal role in the civil rights movement. “We didn’t know her story until just recently,” David revealed, expressing surprise at uncovering her significant contributions. This understanding has deepened their appreciation for her sacrifices as a Freedom Rider.
When asked what advice their mother might offer to today’s NHS students, David suggested she would encourage them to maximize their opportunities. “She would say to keep pushing and striving for more,” she emphasized, highlighting the importance of critical thinking and perseverance.
As the Canty family reflects on their mother’s legacy, they recognize the healing power of sharing her story. “We’re still grieving, but this conversation has been a blessing,” Mr. Canty said. “It’s a way to honor her life and legacy, especially as a proud Withrow alumni.”
Through their remarks, David and Nicole hope to inspire current students to embrace their potential and understand the importance of standing up for justice. “We need to step into her legacy and recognize the struggles and triumphs that shaped our present,” David concluded.
Their tribute is a powerful reminder of the resilience and inspiration that define Frances Canty’s life and the values of the Withrow High School community.
