Gamble Montessori Student Joins Prestigious Global Literacy Program
From Gamble Montessori High School to the global stage, Iyanna Wilson is committed to making a difference. The 11th grader was selected to join the World Literacy Foundation’s (WLF) prestigious global program aimed at improving literacy rates among disadvantaged children.
Her selection highlights her passion for reading and community service. A Westwood resident, Iyanna applied to WLF after successfully organizing a book drive for her school. Her enthusiasm for books and commitment to literacy made her an ideal candidate for the program.
The World Literacy Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to combating illiteracy worldwide, selected Iyanna as part of a diverse group of young leaders aged 15 to 25 from 40 different countries. Over the next year, these young change makers will collaborate on innovative strategies to enhance literacy rates within their communities.
“I love to read books,” Wilson said. “I also enjoy spreading awareness about literacy rates. This opportunity shows that it’s not about where you go to school or your background. You don’t have to attend a private school to get opportunities like this.”
As part of her involvement, Iyanna will be learning about fundraising and is required to complete fundraisers by September 30. She sees this experience as valuable for her future career aspirations.
“I want to be a journalist, so this has helped me make contacts, opened doors and made me more comfortable speaking with people,” Iyanna said.
In addition to her literary pursuits, Iyanna has been active in sharing her love of reading with others. As Iyanna begins this new chapter with the World Literacy Foundation, her local community and beyond will be watching closely to see the impact of her efforts on global literacy.
