Gamble Montessori High School Students Experience Enriching West African Drum and Dance Traditions
Seventh and eighth grade students at Gamble Montessori High School are learning a new beat thanks to an Ohio Arts Council grant aimed at enriching the cultural education of students through a dynamic six-week residency. The program brought in teaching artists from the Bi Okoto Cultural Center, providing students with an opportunity to explore West African drum and dance traditions.
Throughout January and February, each student engaged in weekly workshops, learning the rhythms, movements and cultural significance behind West African drum and dance. The immersive lessons provided students the opportunity to connect with African heritage, while developing skills in music and movement.
The residency ended in two special assemblies, giving students the chance to showcase their newly acquired talents and share their creativity with family, friends and community members. The assemblies were a vibrant celebration of culture, music and community involvement.
Each of Gamble’s five junior high communities focused on learning a different piece of music, contributing to unique and diverse performances. Students worked closely with their peers, deepening their sense of teamwork and collaboration.
“We are thrilled to offer this opportunity for our students to engage with and learn from the rich traditions of West African music and dance,” said seventh and eighth grade language arts and social studies teacher Sarah Lytle. “This residency is a wonderful example of how the arts can inspire creativity, foster cultural appreciation and build community for our students.”
The Bi Okoto Center’s mission to promote African cultural awareness aligns with the school’s commitment to provide diverse and meaningful learning experiences for its students. The performances and residency fostered a profound appreciation for cultural diversity, enriching the school community with vibrant rhythms and meaningful connections.
