From Withrow to the Big Leagues: Rugby Star Drafted in Major League Rugby
Withrow High School alum and rugby standout Le’Donn Mathis tackled his way into Major League Rugby (MLR), drafted in the second round. Mathis was selected by Anthem RC, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, marking a historic achievement as the first Withrow rugby player to turn professional.
"Getting drafted into the MLR was one of the best feelings ever. Considering how hard I have worked since starting in 2018, it was a breath of fresh air to see that others have recognized that work,” Mathis said.
His path to professional rugby was unconventional. Initially hesitant to play due to his lack of familiarity with the sport, he was introduced to rugby by Withrow Coach Nathan Myers.
"I never really heard of the sport prior to Coach Myers showing me," Mathis recalled. However, after practicing and playing a few games, he fell in love with rugby's dynamic nature.
"The fact that everyone on the team could run the ball, tackle, pass and show their true athleticism was much more appealing to me than football, where everyone mostly had one job."
Mathis credits much of his success to Coach Nathan Myers, who played a crucial role in his rugby journey.
“He fundraised for Withrow players to make summer teams and even helped me play in Canada my first summer. He also assisted with my transition to Iowa Central and guided me through my decision to join Lindenwood,” Mathis said. “He has always been my go-to for rugby decisions and life advice."
