Cincinnati Public Schools Honors Dr. O’dell Owens with Dedication Ceremony

Cincinnati Public Schools Honors Dr. O’dell Owens with Dedication Ceremony

Cincinnati Public Schools celebrated the dedication of the Dr. O’dell Owens Center for Learning, commemorating the life and achievements of Dr. O’dell Owens, a celebrated Woodward alum and renowned advocate for education.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the school’s new location in Walnut Hills and drew a crowd of educators, students and community members.

“Dr. Owens' journey is a powerful reminder of what is possible when education and opportunity come together,” CPS Interim Superintendent Shauna Murphy shared during the dedication.

The CPS Board of Education passed a resolution in May, officially renaming the former Lighthouse School to Dr. O’dell Owens Center of Learning.

The event included a formal ribbon-cutting and remarks from Principal Nicole Isaacs, student Tyree McFarland, CPS Board President Eve Bolton, Interim Superintendent Shauna Murphy, Dr. Owens’ son, Christopher Owens and Cincinnati Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney. The ceremony also allowed attendees to explore the new facility and learn about its programs.
“It’s overwhelming and emotional to know that your father has done so much in this community that he has a high school named after him,” Christopher Owens said. “Growing up, you’d never think that.”

Dr. Owens was celebrated for his dedication to enhancing educational opportunities and student success. The school aims to honor his legacy by providing a space that nurtures young minds, helping students unlock their potential while providing support to allow them to thrive.

“My hope is that these students look at his history and where he came from,” Christopher Owens said. “If they can see his spirit, they can achieve anything they set their minds to.”
