Board of Education Votes To Make Shauna Murphy Permanent Superintendent

Board of Education Votes To Make Shauna Murphy Permanent Superintendent

The Cincinnati Public Schools, or CPS, Board of Education voted during its regular business meeting Monday to appoint Shauna Murphy as the District’s permanent superintendent.

Murphy, who has more than 35 years of experience in education, most recently served as CPS’ chief of student, family and community engagement and interim superintendent. She has a strong background in improving academic outcomes, optimizing resources, balancing budgets and building collaborative relationships with students, staff, unions and community stakeholders.

“The board is confident in Shauna Murphy and Dr. Alesia Smith’s ability to lead CPS during this critical time,” said Eve Bolton, president of the CPS Board of Education. “Their strong leadership and shared commitment to equity and excellence will ensure the District stays on course. With their deep knowledge of CPS and dedication to our students, staff and community, we know the District is in capable hands as we move forward.”

Since 1999, Superintendent Shauna Murphy has served CPS as an elementary and high school principal and assistant superintendent. As chief of student, family and community engagement, she strengthened relationships with community partners, expanded parent organizations, and advanced career and technical education pathways in every high school, increasing graduation rates and post-secondary preparation. Murphy holds a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism from Ohio University, a Master of Education from Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati, and superintendent licensure from the University of Dayton.

“It is a privilege to serve as superintendent and to collaborate with our committed educators, staff and community,” Murphy said. “Together, we will remain focused on fostering academic success by creating a supportive environment that uplifts our educators and motivates our students to reach their highest potential.”

The board appointed Dr. Alesia Smith, formerly chief of schools, as deputy superintendent. With over 30 years in education, Dr. Smith began her leadership journey as an assistant principal at a CPS elementary school before serving as a principal, principal coach, and credentialed turnaround specialist with the University of Virginia. She has a strong background in implementing innovative instructional strategies and has driven academic growth, including improvements in every CPS school on the 2023 Ohio State Test.
