Security Badges and Background Checks

Cincinnati Public Schools requires that CPS-issued security badges be worn by anyone entering CPS' schools and offices.

One-time or Infrequent Visitors
- Receive temporary security badges, with their photos, generated by Lobby-Guard machines in each CPS building

Frequent Visitors — Security Badges with Background Checks
- Must obtain CPS-issued security badges; includes student teachers, co-op students, interns, police officers in CPS' employ, consultants, contractors, vendors and volunteers. Background checks are required to receive CPS security badges.
- Local background checks: For individuals who will not have unsupervised contact with students, the check is done in the county where the person lives.
- BCII (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification) and FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) background checks, which include fingerprinting: For everyone who will have unsupervised contact with students; unsupervised contact means not being accompanied by a CPS employee.
Levels of background checks vary based on contact with students. - The Security Badge Authorization Form signed by the building administrator is required.
Background checks are available at two locations:
Cincinnati Public Schools, Education Center, 2651 Burnet Ave, 45219, Corryville
Hours: Monday through Thursday 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. & 1:30–3 p.m.- No appointment necessary - walk-ins welcome – Monday through Thursday (not Fridays)
- What to bring: State ID or Driver’s License, and payment type.
- Issues BCII and FBI only. Credit card or exact cash (no change available) for BCII and FBI — $50,for BCII only — $25, for FBI only — $30. ($5 local background check not offered.)
For renewals, only the FBI is needed if you have continually lived in Ohio for the past five years. New employees and non-Ohio residents need both. - Note: It takes up to 30 days for results to be returned – when available, you will be notified via email (check spam/junk).

Hamilton County Justice Center, 1000 Sycamore Street, Rm. 100, 45202, downtown, Ph. (513-946-6600).
Hours: Monday-Friday 7 a.m.–3 p.m.- Local for Hamilton County residents is $5. They are available from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, with immediate results.
- BCI State of Ohio is $32. They are available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., 7 days a week, with results available in 2-7 weeks.
- FBI Nationwide is $36. They are available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., 7 days a week, with results available in 2-7 weeks.
- *CASH ONLY. Customers must bring exact change if coming between the hours of 3p.m. - 7 p.m., as the office cannot make change at that time.

How to Obtain a CPS Security Badge
- Employees: Bring your postcard from Human Resources.
- Bring the results of the background check to CPS Security Office, Education Center, 2651 Burnet Avenue, 45219, Corryville, if not completed here.
- Security badges issued Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.–noon, and 1 p.m.–3 p.m.
