English Learner Educators
There is an urgent need for more English Learner (EL) educators, and culturally diverse educators, in schools. To provide thought-provoking insight, CPS gathered EL student and educator voices to discuss the significance of representation and cultural understanding in providing equitable education for all students.
The group eloquently expressed the challenges they face in the education system and emphasized the vital role of EL and culturally diverse educators in bridging the gaps between language, culture and learning.
EL educators shared compelling stories of working with students, highlighting the immense impact that educators who understand language acquisition methodologies and possess cultural sensitivity can have on their academic and social development.
Throughout the discussion, the participants explored the multifaceted benefits of having more EL educators and culturally diverse educators in schools, emphasizing the valuable mentorship, support and relatability for EL students these educators provide. By understanding the unique challenges and cultural backgrounds of their students, they foster an inclusive and nurturing learning environment where students feel valued, respected and empowered.
CPS embraces the richness of diverse cultures and ensures that every student, regardless of their language background or cultural heritage, receives the support and resources they need to succeed. We are dedicated to helping students achieve their dreams, and committed to retaining and recruiting educators who want to help.

Black Men in Education
Black CPS educators and students gathered to address an issue that was long been ignored in schools across the country: the need for more Black males in education.
Studies show that students benefit from teachers sharing their cultural backgrounds and life experiences. Unfortunately, Black male educators are significantly underrepresented in the education workforce, comprising only 2% of teachers nationwide. This lack of representation has a profound impact on the academic achievement and social-emotional well-being of our students, particularly Black males.
Throughout the discussion, participants highlighted the positive impact that Black male educators have on their students. They spoke of the value of having role models who share their cultural background and can relate to their experiences. They showcase the importance of having diverse perspectives and voices in the classroom.
CPS is committed to recruiting and retaining Black male educators in our district. By actively working to increase the number of Black male educators in our schools, CPS can provide our students with positive role models and mentors who can help them achieve their full potential.
