Middle Years Program (MYP)
International Baccalaureate (IB) programFor Middle School Students at Roberts Academy
Roberts Academy is a Candidate School* for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Roberts Academy believes is important for our students.
International Baccalaureate is an internationally recognized educational program with a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes creative problem solving, hands-on projects, inquiry-based learning, global focus, and community service.
International Baccalaureate programming does not replace the current curriculum, but rather enhances it. Students will continue to learn traditional subjects, meeting all state academic content standards. The International Baccalaureate framework allows students to see connections between the subjects they study and to apply them to real life, encourages global thinking, and supports the development of effective communication.
What is IB?
IB stands for International Baccalaureate. The International Baccalaureate is an international organization that provides a framework for quality instruction that sets students up for success in school, college, work, and beyond. Students graduating from IB programmes develop skills that enable them to succeed in their paths while building intercultural mindedness and respect.
Programmes
The IB has four distinct programmes, ranging from pre-k to 12th grade. The PYP, or Primary Years Programme, is for students in pre-K through 5th grades. Grades 6 through 10 use the MYP, or Middle Years Programme, while grades 11 and 12 have access to the Diploma Programmes (DP) and Career-related Programmes(CP). Roberts Academy is in the last phase of accreditation for the MYP, with plans to add the PYP. Our partner school, Gilbert A Dater High School, is also in the last phase of accreditation for the MYP and has plans to add the DP and CP programmes to offer CPS families the full IB continuum.
Mission Statement
Roberts Academy aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and compassionate critical thinkers who help create a better, more peaceful world through international-mindedness. Our schools encourage students to become active and lifelong learners equipped to solve problems in a global community.

What are the advantages of an IB education?
- Schools (the only schools authorized to offer IB programs) are subject to a strict accreditation process monitored by the IB, ensuring that schools provide a high-quality education.
- Teaching methods and curriculums are research-based, using the best educational practices from systems around the world.
- Teachers are required to participate in many professional development opportunities to continually promote their awareness of current educational practices and new thinking.
- Programs are recognized internationally and ease the educational transition of students so that their education is not adversely affected if their families relocate.
- All students will learn a second language.
-
Middle School Program
IB offers age-appropriate programming based on a student’s grade level. All 7th, 8th and 9th graders at Dater High School and all 6th, 7th and 8th graders at Roberts Academy will be required to participate in the IB Middle Years Program (MYP).
In the Middle Years Program, students will focus on the following subject areas:
- English
- Social studies
- Mathematics
- Science
- Physical education
- World Language
- Visual and performing arts and design
-
Community Service
The IB program has an annual community service requirement. In the International Baccalaureate Program, service means contributing to the school, local, national or worldwide community to make life better for others. Performing community service work, on campus or off, affords students opportunities to learn about themselves and the community in which they live.
The purpose of the project is to promote a better understanding of "community," to engage students in action or service, and to reflect on the experience. Increased social and self-awareness, initiative, time management skills, opportunities for creative expression, teamwork, commitment, elevated self-esteem and personal integrity are just some of the potential personal benefits of a successful community service experience.
-
Completing MYP
The Middle Years Program will eventually culminate in a personal capstone project. Students completing all program requirements will be eligible to receive the IB Middle Years Program Certificate at the end of 10th grade. Also, students who complete the MYP are well prepared for the IB Diploma program, available to high school juniors and seniors. An IB Diploma indicates to your future university that you can manage the demands of undergraduate studies.

A Closer Look at IB
- The International Baccalaureate (IB) program was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 as a way to provide a rigorous and holistic education that could be recognized internationally.
- IB is an educational framework, not a curriculum. IB is the way we teach.
- IB is now offered at more than 4,100 schools throughout the world and more than 1,600 schools throughout the U.S.
- The hallmarks of the IB program are hands-on projects, student-led inquiry, putting community service into action, and a global focus.
- IB students are encouraged to adopt the 10 attributes of the IB Learner Profile: Inquirer, Knowledgeable, Thinker, Communicator, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-taker, Balanced and Reflective.

Mission of IB
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

8 Reasons why the IB Program Prepares you for College
- It increases academic opportunity — Research** shows that graduates are much more likely to be enrolled at top higher education institutions than entrants holding other qualifications.
- IB students care about more than just results — Through creativity, action, service (CAS) students learn outside the classroom and developemotionally and ethically as well as intellectually.
- It encourages you to become a confident and independent learner — For example, the extended essay requires independent research through an in-depth study.
- It’s an international qualification — The IB is recognized globally by universities and employers.

Why is IB unique?
The IB continuum of programmes helps our schools:
- Build a caring school culture with increased attention to social and emotional learning
- Connect learning across subject areas
- Adapt to the context of our community
- Increase students’ abilities to think critically
- Prepare students for life beyond our walls
- Students participating in the IB are accepted into college at a higher rate than in other programs, and once in college, they have higher retention rates.
Developing our students and our school culture
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) learner profile describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success. They imply a commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others, and the world around them.
At Roberts Academy, we strive to develop students who exhibit these qualities in the classroom. Each month, we focus on one Learner Profile Attribute.
