Academics
-
At Cheviot, we believe in leadership, academic growth and achievement for all children — and it shows. We have received statewide recognition for accelerated growth for all students. The Ohio Board of Education awarded Cheviot with the Momentum Award for 2015 for earning straight A’s in value-added growth. Value-added growth means all of our students are showing at least a year’s worth of achievement in a year’s time.
How are we making a difference? Not only are our teachers and staff absolutely committed to our students, we also use the following strategies.

Leader In Me
-
We can't expect our children to be leaders of tomorrow if we don’t empower them to be leaders of themselves today. That's why Cheviot is proud to be the first Leader in Me school in southwest Ohio.
Developed by Franklin Covey, the Leader in Me program is built on the idea that our students can and should be leaders of themselves. The program helps teachers develop leadership skills in our students. Our students discover their own strengths and their own voice, and they gain opportunities to shine.
Content from the book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," is key to the Leader in Me program. The 7 Habits are universal principles of personal and interpersonal effectiveness, such as responsibility, vision and collaboration.
We integrate leadership development into our classes and focus on it during Advisory. Discussing which habits a historical figure or a character in a story use are just a few of the simple ways to incorporate the 7 Habits into what teachers are already doing. All students also belong to Leadership Clubs, which meet on the first Friday of every month. Students run these clubs, and their teachers are there to offer support.
The 7 Habits we focus on are:
- Be Proactive (You’re in Charge)
- Begin with the End in Mind (Have a Plan)
- Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play)
- Think Win-Win (Everyone can Win)
- Seek First to Understand, then be Understood (Listen Before you Talk)
- Synergize (Together is Better)
- Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best)

Enrichment
At Cheviot, we focus on educating the whole student. Our core content subjects are complemented by the following programs:
- Visual Arts: Art instruction is offered weekly for grades K-6. Students are exposed to art history, art methods, visual thinking skills and arts-infused classroom activities.
- Computer Lab: Weekly computer instruction time allows students to practice keyboarding, learn basic technology, learn internet researching skills and engage with supplemental practice work for academic subjects.
- Music: Comprehensive music instruction includes note recognition, rhythm, percussion and choral training.
- Physical Education: The school’s fully equipped gym provides space for physical activities of all kinds. Students in grades K-6 receive weekly opportunities to participate in a variety of team and cooperative sportsmanship activities.
- Intervention: The Cheviot Intervention Specialist Team provides services to those students who need small groups and one-on-one instructional time in addition to the classroom instructional period. The Specialist Team works with students who have a written plan created for students with learning disabilities by the student's teachers, parents or guardians, the school administrator, and other interested parties.
- Capstone Projects: Digital Backpack reinforces project/problem-based learning, technology application and the 21st Century 4-Cs. The ability to work in teams is emphasized by the creation of multimedia presentations for interdisciplinary topics of study aligned to academic standards in social studies and science.

Vertical Instructional Teaming Process
Our teachers work across grade levels to ensure every student receives the instruction and intervention he or she needs to be successful.

Wildly Important Goals (WIGs)
Every semester, students and staff use Habit 2 — Begin with the End in Mind — to set goals for greater growth in academics and leadership. Our students maintain a personal Leadership Notebook to manage their goals and evidence of academic performance and growth. They also share these notebooks with their peers, teachers and parents during student-led conferences. We use "The Four Disciplines of Leadership" to climb the mountain to our goals.

Incentives
We recognize academic and leadership achievements in several ways.
