Frequently Asked Questions
High Schools of Choice

Question: Can students with disabilities go to any high school?
Answer:
The overwhelming majority of students with disabilities have the same options as any other student. All of the high schools offer the special education services to meet the needs of most students with disabilities. There are a few students with very special needs that will be assigned to programs to meet their needs. A small number of schools have entrance criteria that students with disabilities must also meet to be considered.

Question: Are there a limited number of spaces for students with disabilities/IEPs in each high school program?
Answer:
No, schools may not determine enrollments based on disability, however each school does have a limit on their total student enrollment.

Question: Will students with disabilities get the services that are on their IEP at any high school?
Answer:
Each high school is responsible for providing the services on the IEPs of the students enrolled.

Question: What classes will students with disabilities take in the new high school?
Answer:
All High Schools of Choice require students to take Math, English, Science and Social Studies classes. They will also take a class in the area of focus for that school. Students can be in a regular education class or a special education class based on the IEP.

Question: If the student has severe special needs may we choose a high school?
Answer:
Some students with disabilities may need very special services that may only be in some schools. The Department of Student Services will make every effort to place students in classes that meet their needs.

Question: How can I make sure that my child's Special Education records will follow my child?
Answer:
Special Education records are available by computer, which is accessible to the new school within 24 hours after a student is actively enrolled.

How will my child get to and from the high school we choose?
Answer:
The district has committed to providing transportation to all high school students. Most students will be transported by Metro. If the student needs more specialized transportation, arrangements will be made.
