Frequently
Asked Questions
504 PlansQuestion: What possible test
accommodations can be included in a 504 plan?
Answer: Students with 504 plans are
entitled to the same testing accommodations as students with IEP’s. However,
while students with IEP’s can be excused from the high-stakes consequences of a
test, students with 504 plans cannot. Accommodations are allowable if the do not
change the structure of a test (e.g., eliminating some of the choices on a
multiple-choice question), change what the test measures (e.g., reading the
reading passages on the reading test would change the test from a test of
reading comprehension to a test of oral comprehension), or enhance a student’s
response (e.g., you have to scribe exactly what a student says, not what you
think they said.) Other common accommodations might include extended time,
small-group testing, and breaks when needed.
