Classroom Model
Cincinnati Public Schools'
Standards' Based Model is the design centerpiece of the Facilities Master
Plan. This architectural model has been developed specifically to support
teaching practices that are improving student achievement in our schools.
With ample square footage for active learning activities, the
standards-based model features a group design with four classrooms built
around an extended-learning area. Although the group learning areas are
linked, each classroom is enclosed with walls. Primary classrooms are
designed for a ratio of 18 students for each teacher, and fourth- through
twelfth-grade
classes are designed for a ratio of 25 students per teacher.
In primary classrooms, a team of five teachers will work with
students in each group. The design lends itself to flexible groupings of
students to better focus on individual learning needs. This flexibility is
important to help students reach academic standards because not all
students learn the same way or at the same rate.
Wherever possible, the plan calls for elementary schools that serve
650 students in preschool through eighth grade. The size would total
roughly 89,000 square feet, with seven groups of classrooms. Each classroom
would cover 900 square feet. There would be separate rooms for music,
science, art and special education, as well as spaces for parent, agency
or community use. A similar design is planned for high schools; in most
cases, several small high schools will operate within an existing
building. An adapted version of the basic model will be used in elementary
schools with smaller student enrollments.
