
Government and Public Administration jobs offer opportunities to provide important public service to our local community, or at the state, national or even international level. If you get excited about local or national elections; working with a variety of community groups, even in foreign countries; analyzing problems and making recommendations to governing bodies such as the city council, the state legislature, federal agencies, and other departments; then the Government and Public Administration cluster may be for you. Government affects Americans in countless ways in a democratic society. Government is the means of expressing the public will.
This includes a variety of activities. In fact, virtually every occupation can be found within government. However there are activities that are unique to government jobs. The government defends us from foreign aggression; represents American interests abroad; and deliberates, passes and enforces laws. State and local governments pass laws or ordinances and provide vital services to the public.
There are thousands of challenging educational and training opportunities within the high-skilled world of Government and Public Administration. These are jobs that require a variety of education. Some jobs can be obtained directly out of high school. Others require either a two- or four-year degree.
Many fields in Government and Public Administration require job shadowing or internship experiences. High-school course work should include a solid background in social studies, political science, foreign language and history.
