CPS' Summer School with the theme of "Bridging to Higher Achievement" aims to prepare students to meet Ohio's academic standards and to give students chances to practice and strengthen skills they learned during the school year. Summer school can provide students the extra time and focused intervention they need to make sure they are proficient in the core content areas.
Summer School 2008 will focus on reading and mathematics because these subjects are so important to success in school.
Principals will send letters home to the parents of students who would benefit from summer school, strongly encouraging parents to enroll their children for the enrichment lessons. A recommendation for summer school is based a student's performance on benchmark drills and Ohio Achievement Tests, classroom assessments, teachers' recommendations, Individual Education Plan (IEP) recommendations, etc.
Parents of CPS students also may request that their children attend summer school. Talk to the staff at your child's school to see if summer-school space is available.
Classes will be held at 25 school sites around the district, often with students from different schools sharing a building. Transportation will be provided to students who live more than 3/4 mile from their neighborhood school summer-school sites.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Breakfast will be cereal, juice and milk. At lunchtime, students may choose from a chef salad or sandwich, with fruit and juice or milk.
At the end of the Summer School session, progress reports showing how students did on standards indicators, classroom assignments and writing portfolios will be provided to parents.

Leadership/Socialization some schools offer tours of their campuses or match incoming students with current students who act as mentors and guides.
Post-Secondary Experience students are given the opportunity to do a college visit or attend a class on a college campus.
Seniors who are lacking credit to graduate may attend districtwide summer school so they will be counted as 2008 graduates. Eligible students may take a maximum of four courses.
